- to nowy planowany dopiero projekt. Nie wiem czy dobrze zrozumiałem, ale twórcy (dwóch) rozważają jego komercjalizację w celu przyspieszenia prowadzenia prac badawczych, a ogólnie projekt ma zajmować się zagadnieniami związanymi ze stuczną inteligncją. Poprawcie mnie jeśli się mylę.

he project has been launched. We have generated a couple hundred work units consisting of 5,000 neurons each. 72 workunits have been processed successfully. The results section from the main project page contain more information about that.

A larger number of workunits have returned errors due to slow connection issues. The Internet connection is very slow and that will be fixed over the next couple of days. The site and server will be down again for a couple of hours during the server move. These issues are the result of the server crash from last week. No data has been lost.

We have opened the forums and have set up RSS news feeds. Next step will be to launch the Windows client application.

Over a period of couple of days we have simulated 520,000 neurons. The neurons have soma and one dendrite. The simulation is performed using Hodgkin-Huxley models with a simulation time step of 5 milliseconds and for a duration of 100 milliseconds. Computations are performed in parallel for all cells at each time step. Data is stored in embedded databases.

In order to understand the significance of this experiment we should compare these values with the estimated number of neurons of the honey bee, which stands at around 850,000 neurons. The human brain has an estimated 100 billion neurons. As the project picks up steam with the launch of applications for other platforms we should be able to run increasingly large simulations.

Computing Information
The neural network simulator is an application that simulates neurons. Each downloaded work unit contains 5,000 neurons. Because the simulator is in an initial phase and we have very few cellular models implemented, we can only use it to test for simulations capacity. To date the largest brain simulation has been done on a cluster of 27 machines, with 100 billion neurons simulated over a period of 50 days. While it was a very interesting experiment which pushed the frontier further on it was a partial simulation only, in the sense that many of the required components were not implemented due to hardware constraints.

The neurons were created, simulated and then destroyed in memory and without any data being stored. Based on their results the estimate for full brain simulations was thought to be the year 2016; we would like to prove otherwise. From a practical point of view it didn't advance the knowledge further on and that's why we would like to continue along this line of thought and bridge these results with some practical data. The problem of storage and computing power is esential for large scale brain simulations because without them we can't plan and estimate these requirements. Without planning there is also no clear understanding as to what is needed in order to do that. As we advance with the simulation and more and more neurons get simulated, we should be able to make increasingly precise estimations on storage, number of computers required, duration, bandwidth and other factors. Regardless of the fact that at this stage our simulation is not precise and it lacks in many aspects, this is what we want to achieve with your help.

There is also the added benefit that once we will publish these results and the public at large would see that the capacity to simulate the entire brain is considerably higher than previously thought, a large stumbling block will be removed from the path of artificial intelligence.

Z tego co wyczytalem to prawdopodobnie w tym projekcie przeprowadza sie symulacje dla firmy, ktora to chce zarobic na tym kase. Chca odsprzedac czesc wynikow innym firmom - jesli zle wyczytalem, prosze mnie poprawic.

Na podstawie małego researcha powiedziałbym, że wygląda na to, że jest to projekt stworzony przez firmę Intelligence Realm Inc. z Kanady, będącą prywatną własnością i zajmującą się dostarczaniem rozwiązań informatycznych dla różnych firm. Firma ta chwali się tym, że systemy te są budowane z wykorzystaniem innowacyjnego podejścia wielodyscyplinarnego, np. z zakresu sztucznej inteligencji i sieci neuronowych (?; "computational neuroscience").

Dzięki "pasji do technologii" dokonała znacznych postępów w zakresie symulacji ludzkiego mózgu.

This distributed computing project is part of a larger project that is reverse engineering the brain in order to build a large scale artificial intelligence system. The first of its kind. Because we are a very small company (2 people) that is tackling an enormous challenge, we are asking the public at large to get involved by donating computer time. In order to be able to support and accelerate its development we will also pursue an alternative path, through commercialization.

Projekt BOINC jest częścią większego projektu mającego na celu stworzenie systemu sztucznej inteligencji wielkiej skali. Pierwszego w swoim rodzaju. Ponieważ firma jest mała (2 osoby !!!) zdecydowała się na wykorzystanie idei BOINC. Aby zapewnić środki na utrzymanie i przyspieszyć rozwój podejmą alternatywne działania w postaci komercjalizacji.

Według opisu podanego przez lukassszzza, projekt w obecnej fazie wykonuje symulacje 5000 neuronów w czasie 100 milisekund z krokiem 5 milisekund z użyciem modelu Hodgkin-Huxley'a. Jednakże żadne konkretne wyniki nie są gromadzone, bowiem na tym etapie projekt ma służyć precyzyjnemu oszacowaniu potrzebnych zasobów: komputerów, wielkości przestrzeni do przechowywania danych, wielkości łącza, czasu trwania, itd.

Jednym słowem cel jest światły, i może być wykorzystany w celach komercyjnych dla zapewnienia środków na jego rozwój.
Mnie osobiście jedynie zastanawia wielkość tej firmy zmierzającej do przodowania w zakresie sztucznej inteligencji (2 osoby), ale z kolei nasz rodzimy projekt - Enigma - jest dziełem jednego człowieka.  ;)

Dziś przyjrzałem się nieco bliżej temu projektowi.

Jakkolwiek projekt wydaje się być prowadzony sumiennie, na stronie jest już dość dużo materiału, muszę powiedzieć, że większość z tego co jest tam napisane nie jest wystarczające, żebym ze spokojnym sumieniem przyłączył się do tego projektu.

Projekt jest rzeczywiście prowadzony przez osoby związane z prywatną firmą działającą w Kanadzie. Firma wg swojej strony oferuje zaawansowany soft oparty o najnowsze zdobycze informatyki w dziedzinie neuroobliczeń itp. Ale nie jest napisane po co to komu poza "designed to fit your needs". Sama strona daje skąpe informacje na temat działalności firmy.

Odnośnie komercyjności projektu sprawa jest jasna:
"We also need to continue the research and involve other researchers and research groups that can contribute to our project and its final goal. That requires funding and commercialization is the only acceptable way for us to do that."

Wiążąca się z tym kwestia dostępności wyników projektu jest bardzo niejasna:
"Down the road some results will be published and others will not. Some source code is published and other code is not. We are deciding on a case by case basis."

"Upublicznimy to co nam się spodoba" właściwie nic nie znaczy.

Plany projektu:
"We intend to build a system that has the brain capacity of all people living in the world. This way we can ensure that no one will be left behind. Its capacity will go far beyond the petabyte scale."

Jak dla mnie brzmi to dość śmiesznie, jak na 2-osobowy projekt. A czy uda im się przyciągnąć tysiące... czas pokaże.

Kwestie sztucznej inteligencji to już temat na osobną debatę naukowo-filozoficzną i tego w co kto wierzy. Ale administrator jest rozbrajająco szczery:

"If the system will eventually be smarter than you, its creator, wouldn't that pose a risk?
It sure does. We understand the negative and positive implications of building an Artificial Intelligence system. That's why we have already restricted access and we will implement multiple levels of control and monitoring. "

That can make the asymmetric threat a tragic reality for all of us. The long-term threat stems from the AI system itself. By having an intelligent system that is very smart and capable, if the system will be used as a weapon, we will all have to deal with a machine intelligence that can be out of control and capable of destructing all of us."

Scenariusz rodem z Terminatora, ale czy hollywoodzkie wizje na temat AI mają cokolwiek wspólnego z rzeczywistością? To właśnie kwestia wiary...

Moje wątpliwości sprowadzają się do tego, że w odróżnieniu od projektów uniwersyteckich, w tym przypadku nie bardzo wiadomo co będziemy liczyć (firma nie udostępni całości kodu), dla kogo będziemy liczyć (prywatna firma może pracować dla każdego), a gdyby udało się za x lat rzeczywiście osiągnąć AISowi w/w cele do czego zostanie wykorzystana owa sztuczna inteligencja?

Z drugiej strony, jeśli intencje są szczere a projektowi się powiedzie (i scenariusz Terminatora nie zostanie zrealizowany) może to rzeczywiście przynieść niezwykłe korzyści dla ludzkości.

Co do strony technicznej: projekt niedawno przeszedł na system stałej ilości punktów/WU = 75 i jednostki są dostępne.
